It was midnight, I was snoring like a pig when the entire house shook. I woke up almost immediately “There’s an earthquake!”, I shouted down the hallway, the earthquake made it hard to walk. I was basically being tossed around, luckily, nothing fell off the shelves.
When I finally got outside, I did the drop, cover and hold under the bench and waited until the earthquake was over. When I was sure that the ground wasn’t shaking anymore, I slowly crawled out from under the bench and went back to sleep. There was a few more aftershocks but they were fine.
In the morning, I got up and turned on the TV, on there the was a news report about the earthquake. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake had struck somewhere around Kaikoura. Because of landslides, the town was completely blocked off from any help so if people wanted to get in, they had to go by helicopter. The earthquake was felt all over NZ and it was so severe that all the train lines in Wellington were closed and all schools from North Canterbury to Wellington were closed until they were confirmed to be safe.
